This magical presentation of Kadono's beloved 1985 Japanese fantasy novel about an enterprising 12-year-old witch takes flight thanks to Kim Mai Guest's enchanting narration. Many know this story thanks to the great 1989 Studio Ghibli animated feature directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and the complete tale will delight listeners. The brisk action begins with Kiki facing a big new challenge as she comes of age. All young witches must leave home, hop on a broom, and find a city in need of their supernatural services. With a gleeful bounce in her voice, Guest deftly establishes the girl's optimistic outlook and her hopes for success. Kiki quickly sounds deflated after she lands in a seaside town packed with residents who fear and/or dislike witches. Perhaps she can earn their trust with her super-helpful delivery service. Guest does well with the supporting characters, especially Kiki's gruff, sarcastic black cat, Jiji. She gracefully slips into the voices of Kiki's dignified witch mother, human father, and the townspeople whom Kiki encounters. Audiences will enjoy following Kiki as she gains confidence and listening to a gifted narrator who helps the presentation soar. Grades 4-7. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
