A lavish but derivative martial arts action drama, Call of Heroes stars Sean Lau as the sheriff of an unprotected village threatened by an advancing warlord, while Louis Koo costars as the warlord's sadistic son, a grinning psychopath who kills with impunity until he's arrested for murdering three innocents. Meanwhile, a wandering rogue (Eddie Peng) defends a teacher and her students as they flee from the oncoming army, reluctantly becoming their protector—which means squaring off against an old friend (Wu Jing), who is a colonel in the warlord's army. The film is a mix of classic martial arts costume drama and old-school action, the kind of Hong Kong movie that wears its heart on its sleeve and tends to wave it around with speeches about justice and duty. The hero is a paragon of virtue, the villain cackles as he murders civilians, and the wandering fighter is roused to action by the courage of the sheriff. Directed by Benny Chan with little distinction (although the action scenes are directed by the great Sammo Hung, who brings his flair for creative choreography to the battles), this is ultimately a familiar story with no surprises featuring characters with no dimensions. Optional, at best. (S. Axmaker) Copyright Video Librarian Reviews 2017.
