A Reading List Must Angie Thomas’ debut novel, The Hate U Give, should be on every high school reading list alongside To Kill a Mockingbird and the Handmaid's Tale, not because it’s a classic or even destined to be a classic, but because it is so immediately important.
Why immediately important?
Starting on page 166 in the hardcover edition, and continuing on through page 171, a complex analysis of racism and its personal and economic effects is made simple and accessible by the author. This alone makes the novel a worthy high school reading list candidate.
But there’s more. Side discussions or even just throw-away comments about birth control, followers versus leaders, and when to speak up rather than remain quiet are peppered wisely throughout the novel.
Author Thomas’ description of racialized relationships and just how loaded they are is spot-on just as the laugh out loud moments are, the power of black women and their use of the stank-eye and the author’s control of black-speak and her main character’s insight regarding how “being two different people is exhausting.”
And, just because this novel is cataloged as YA (Young Adult), doesn’t mean that adults won’t be informed or won’t enjoy the story or the characters. Pick up this novel and thank Black Jesus that you did.
The Hate U give (THUGLIFE) This book is such an amazing book for grades 7 - 16 or older. It's about a girl named Starr that grows up in a negro family and a sketchy neighborhood. The story is about Starr trying to get Justice for her friend that got shot by a white police officer after him reaching for a hairbrush and the police officer thought it was a gun.

The Hate U Give Teenage Star is at a party with friends when things get out of hand. Her friend Khalil offers her a ride home, and during the ride they are pulled over by a police officer. Khalil is shot and killed during the stop. This is an incredibly powerful #ownvoices novel that explores racism and classism in contemporary American society. This is a must read novel.
