Beautifully drawn for the greatest dystopia fiction It is one of Margaret Atwood’s greatest works of all time which was adapted for the big screen in 1990 and later as a tv series in 2017. In 2019, it is given the graphic novel treatment which brings the story to vivid life for readers
For those who never read or heard of The Handmaid’s Tale, it is about a woman who lives in the Republic of Gilead where oppression is rife and women have lost their rights. The more frightening part about living in Gilead is where some women become birthing vessels against their will
This is graphic novel would appeal to The Handmaid’s Tale fans or fans of dystopia fiction
The Handmaid's Tale by Maragret Atwood This book is rather heartbreaking, especially reading it as a woman. It gives the audience a sense of what life could be like should women's rights be taken away entirely, and a patriarchal, totalitarian regime forced women into perverse roles within the newly created Gilead. However, what makes this entire book - and hopefully the last season of the show - if the "Historical" Notes, written at the end of the book. In this author's notes section, Atwood offers an insight, through the discussion of a professor in the 2100's looking back on the Gileadean Era of history, the ways she was able to weave together this story. She offers an explanation for the choppiness of the text (the text was transcribed from historical recordings they found that had no specific order, so they placed it together themselves), how and why she decided to make the Gileadean society the way it was (citing historical references and precedents for the world she created), and gave the reader hope. Hope and information on how the regime came to an end, how this story was important, and what society was like nearly 150 years later. I am looking forward to the sequel(ish) Atwood is releasing in September 2019! I'm also looking forward to watching more of the television show on Hulu (since the next season just aired this week!)
Atwood''s finest! This is Atwood''s finest book. It is a great choice for a bookgroup.
PRR Suggestion Margaret Atwood (winner of the Booker Prize for fiction) writes in a very literary style. Atwood''s Handmaid''s Tale takes a look at the near future and presents the story of Offred, a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, once the United States, an oppressive world where women are no longer allowed to read and are valued only as long as they are viable for reproduction. The novel is medical and scientific in nature, a very unique science fiction tale, and leaves you thinking. The characters are complex, and struggle against a society that has seemingly abandoned its humanity. The Handmaid''s Tale is darkly evocative, with a nightmarish view of the future.
An Evergreen Library favorite! A frightening idea where sterility is the norm and fertile woman are treated as cattle to produce children for the upper class who cannot have any. This is a shocking story. - MW
