Briggs' Mercy Thompson book series is one of the standard-bearers of the urban-fantasy subgenre. And Silence Fallen, the tenth book of the series, continues the tradition. While having all the hallmarks of an urban fantasy, including werewolves, vampires, and the Fae, Briggs' approach is unique in how she places those cultures in the midst of a human world. That placement deliciously complicates the events here, which find Mercy kidnapped by the world's most powerful vampire, Bonarata, and dragged halfway across the globe, away from her mate and her pack. Breaking free from Bonarata doesn't improve her situation, as she's in a world she's only familiar with from books, alone and with few resources other than her own powers. And just when it seems like it can't get any worse, the ghosts begin to appear. Even if readers haven't read the first nine books, there is enough here to pick up and run with Mercy's perilous adventures. Copyright 2017 Booklist Reviews.
