In this second series entry, FBI detective Amos Decker, who remembers everything, is interested in the case of former football adversary Mike Mars, currently on death row for killing his own family. But Mars is saved by another inmate's eleventh-hour confession. Why? The FBI team investigates this gripping case, which spans decades. Narrators Brewer and Cassidy skillfully navigate this "stranger in a strange land" scenario, each voicing multiple characters, mostly southerners, in tones ranging from a gently lilting "southern-lite" to the deep-fried born and bred accents of local law enforcement chafing at federal interference from the North. Narrators convincingly differentiate cops from lawyers via speech patterns as much as content and emotion. Baldacci's fans will line up. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
